Title : Structural and micromorphological changes under the effect of air pollution on the leaves of some ligneous plants species from Romania

Air pollution is a growing problem of the society in our times. Despite the increasing number of discussions taking place worldwide, the results regarding the reduction of the pollution in general and of the atmospheric one in particular remain a desire not so easy to achieve. Atmospheric pollutants affect both humans and other organisms from the environment. The interactions between plant species and different types of air pollutants were investigated by many authors. Our paper aims to give an overview of these interactions and to highlight (through a case study) the effects of air pollution in the city of Iasi (Romania). Species of woody plants (with evergreen leaves) cultivated as ornamental in the green spaces of the city were studied. Histo-anatomical analyses were performed in order to show the structural changes that occur under the influence of atmospheric pollutants. Also, the leaves were investigated from micromorphological point of view (to observe the ultrastructural changes affecting the epicuticular wax, the stomata and other components of the epidermis). The results highlight the degree of sensitivity / resistance of the investigated species, as they can be successfully cultivated in the green spaces of the large cities
