Education and work experience -in 1973 he graduated from the Leningrad Forestry Engineering Academy named after S. M. Kirov, in 1976 he defended his candidate's dissertation, and in 1994 he defended his doctoral dissertation. Since 1978, he has been working at the V. L. Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, having alternately held the positions of junior, scientific and senior researcher. Since 1990, Head of the Laboratory of Ecology of Plant Communities, since 1996, Deputy. director of the Institute for scientific work, since 2001 Director of the BIN RAS, and since 2016-head. department of the Peter the Great Botanical Garden of the BIN RAS. At the same time, since 1996, he has been the head of the Department of Botany and Dendrology of the St. Petersburg State Forestry University named after S. M. Kirov.
Research interests include: the study of botany and ecology, biological diversity and dynamics of boreal forests, dendrology, dendroindication, the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors on the stability of woody plants and their communities.
