Title : GC-MS and FTIR identification of bioactive components in the stem-leaves ethyl acetate extract of parquetina nigrescens. (Afzel) bullock

Abstract:

Parquetina nigrescens is a plant used traditionally to treat many bacterial, fungi, or parasitic infections like gonorrhea helminthiasis, anemia, and menstrual disorders. This work aimed to analyze the bioactive component of ethyl acetate extract using GC-MS. The samples were collected, dried, and pounded by a mortar. The extraction was done successively starting with Chloroform, pet ether, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. The ethyl acetate fraction was used in this analysis. The FTIR analysis of the ethyl acetate extract reveals the presence of ester at 1166.7cm-1, C=O bond stretch at 1606.5cm-1, and alkyl halide C-Cl bond stretch at 767.8cm. The GCMS analysis revealed the presence of 36 components with various retention times and concentrations. The most abundant bioactive compounds are (E) 9- Octadecanoic acid ethyl ester (21.15%), hexadecanoic acid ethyl ester (10.43%), palmitoleic acid (6.61%), oleic acid (0.93%). The presence of these compounds could be responsible for their traditional medicinal uses.
