Title : Methods on conservation of medicinal plants

Abstract:

According to the IUCN and the WWF, there are between 50,000 and 80,000 flowering plant species used for medicinal purposes worldwide. Among these, about 15,000 species are threatened with extinction from overharvesting and habitat destruction. Herbal plants that have been used by Ayurved, Sidda, Unani, Tibetan system of health care face an uncertain future due to over exploitation. Furthermore, up to 80 % of people in developing countries are totally dependent on herbal drugs for their primary healthcare, and over 25 % of prescribed medicines in developed countries are derived from wild plant species. Conservation strategy (IUCW, UNEP & WWF, 1980) defines conservation as “the management of human use of the biodiversity so that it may yield the greatest sustainable benefit to present generation while maintaining its potential to meet the needs and aspirations of future generations” In situ conservation is the conservation of living resources by maintaining them in their natural ecosystem in which they occur. For Examples; national parks, sanctuaries, natural reserves, reserves of the biosphere, sacred grooves, the conservation of forest areas preserve through Protected Areas like National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries and Biosphere Reserves etc. Ex-situ conservation dealing with the off-site conservation of the wild genetic resources/ genetic diversity i.e. the conservation of areas outside their natural habitat used to safeguard them from destruction, replacement or deterioration. For example, Botanical gardens, zoological parks and through long term preservation of plant propagules in gene banks (seed bank, pollen bank, DNA libraries, etc.) and in plant tissue culture repositories and by cryopreservation).

Audience Take Away Notes:

  • Plant conservation is a global concern due to various reasons. As per report up to 80 % of people in developing countries are totally dependent on herbal drugs for their primary healthcare, and over 25 % of prescribed medicines in developed countries are derived from wild plant species
  • Worldwide Plant Lover Community always welcomes those people who have knowledge in concern streams
  • This research could be used by other faculty to expand their own research or teaching
  • This provides a practical solution to a problem that could simplify or make a designer’s job more efficient
  • It will improve the accuracy of a design, or provide new information to assist in a design problem
  • It Opens the way for conservation of herbal plant and make aware about that
