Title : Survey on incidence and severity of groundnut rosette disease in Adamawa state
Abstract:
Groundnut Rosette Disease (GRD) is the most important viral disease of groundnuts in Nigeria, especially in North Eastern Nigeria. The incidence and severity as well as farmers survey was carried out to determine the incidence, severity as well as farmers awareness on management of Groundnut Rosette Disease in five major groundnut growing areas of Adamawa State which include Jada, Ganye, Mayobelwa, Hong and Gombi LGA respectively during 2023 growing season using a structured questionnaire. The results of the survey showed Hong LGA recorded the highest incidence (80 %) while Mayobelwa LGA recorded the least (65 %) Also Hong LGA recorded the highest disease severity (4.00) while Mayobelwa LGA recorded the least (2.00). Farmers’ awareness results on GRD show that 80 % of farmers in Hong LGA experience incidence of pests and diseases while in Ganye LGA is 60 % and in Jada LGA is 40 % in Gombi LGA 60 % and in Mayobelwa LGA is 50 %. Also 90 % of farmers in Hong LGA observed rosette disease in their farms in Ganye LGA 80 % while in Jada is 70 % and in Gombi is 80 % and in Mayobelwa is 50 %.The most common insect observed in all the surveyed areas is Aphids. Therefore, this research demonstrated the widespread occurrence of GRD in major groundnut-growing areas of Adamawa State. From this study, it can be concluded that, GRD is present in all the surveyed area. Hong LGA recorded the highest incidence and severity of GRD. This study revealed that GRD was prevalent in all the fields of five LGA surveyed in Adamawa State.
