Plant lipids are essential components of cell membranes and are involved in a range of metabolic processes. They are composed of fatty acids, glycerol, and sterols, and are mostly non-polar molecules. Plant lipids are important for energy storage, protection from environmental stress, and they provide structure to plant cells. Plant lipids can be divided into three main categories; glycerolipids, phospholipids, and sterol lipids. Glycerolipids are the most abundant and are composed of fatty acids and glycerol; they form the majority of membrane lipids and are involved in energy storage. Phospholipids are composed of fatty acids, glycerol, and phosphate, and are responsible for the structural integrity of the cell membrane. Sterol lipids are composed of sterols and fatty acids, and are involved in the regulation of the membrane’s permeability. Plant lipids are essential to the survival of plants and have a variety of important functions in the cell.
